On Design Intent and Purpose
Purpose is the reason for which anything is done or exists. Intent is what we are aiming for and planning to achieve.
As a designer, in order to identify intent and purpose in my projects I need focus, clear thinking, a receptive open mindset as well as a firm hold on direct relevance.
Do you know your project’s intent, driving ideas, purpose? Once we establish the project’s intent and purpose, concrete actions are required to articulate and manifest them. Purpose without action is just an idea.
But what comes first: the creative idea or the intent? Ideally, our design process would feel like a graceful dance between ideas and design intent. To help us understand intent and purpose more clearly, the idea of “Parti” behind an architect's design becomes very useful.
Architectural Parti refers to the overall, comprehensive concept or architectural idea driving a project. It describes clearly and concisely the project’s main ideas, functions, spatial qualities, architectural expression, structural approach, materials, scale, siting and so on. A powerful, simple and effective way to distil complex multidimensional thinking into an expressive sketch.
Do you know your business’s intent and purpose? Do they align with your own personal and professional intent and purpose?
These simple questions hold keys to assist us in identifying hidden or overt conflicts, addressing them, creating alignment with a strong sense of purpose on every task we perform. Once our professional and personal intents and purposes are matched, then we find a strong sense of clarity, relevance and connection which will energise us to enhance our performance.
